3 pilots say they won't fly deported asylum seekers to Uganda, Rwanda

There's no secret deal with Israel on relocation of migrants - Mushikiwabo

There's no secret deal with Israel on relocation of migrants - Mushikiwabo

In a speech at the Knesset, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged the wave of protests against the deportations.

The statement looks to end speculation over whether Rwanda had agreed to a deal, after Mushikiwabo said in late November that negotiations had indeed been ongoing with Israel.

"Netanyahu agreed with President Kagame, who made clear that he would only accept a process that fully complies with worldwide law", the statement read.

The 38,000 Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers now residing in Israel, referred to by Israeli officials as "infiltrators", face a hard choice over the next few months: either receive a one-time payment of $3,500 and leave Israel "voluntarily" to an African country, or, stay in Israel and endure indefinite incarceration in the Saharonim detention center, where freedom of movement is curbed and rights are limited.

The Prime Minister went on defending the modalities of the deportations.

After the two met again in Kenya at President Uhuru Kenyatta's inauguration, Netanyahu announced that Israel would begin forcibly deporting migrants to third countries, which have been widely reported to be Uganda and Rwanda.

In the past, Kigali had admitted that there were talks with Tel Aviv on the issue of African immigrants but later said there was no signed agreement in place.

Launched by prominent Israeli Reform Rabbi Susan Silverman, the movement proposes to shelter African asylum seekers who are due for deportation in order to save them from unsafe prospects upon their return to Africa. About 72 percent are Eritrean and 20 percent are Sudanese, and the vast majority arrived between 2006 and 2012. "We must stop this government from.expelling refugees and asylum seekers to the unknown", declared Meretz MK Michal Rozin who convened the Knesset conference, alongside Dov Khenin from the Joint List and Kulanu member Eli Alaluf.

Israel, now is home to about 40,000 asylum seekers, according to government figures.

"In reference to the rumors that have been recently spread in the media, the Government of Rwanda wishes to inform that it has never signed any secret deal with Israel regarding the relocation of African migrants", reads a statement from Government Spokesperson, Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

Three Israeli pilots have spoken out against the forced deportations of asylum seekers back to Africa, saying they would refuse to take control of planes involved in the practice.

Uganda has also denied that there was an agreement with Israel regarding asylum seekers. He said any suggestion the migrants would be deported to his country was "fake news ... absolute rubbish".

Asmait Merhatsion, a 28-year-old Eritrean asylum seeker who delivered her testimony at the Knesset on Wednesday told i24NEWS, "it's not about money, $3,500 means nothing for us, we paid around $35,000 to get to Israel...we are asking the Israeli government to give us asylum".

In recent weeks the Israeli government approved the deportation of refugees to third countries.

Israel said it would pay a one-way ticket for those who voluntarily leave, according to Haaretz. "They receive permits for housing, work and the chance to integrate into the country", he claimed. They receive significant financial assistance from us.

Also on Wednesday evening, Netanyahu met with Guatemalan Finance Minister Julio Hector Estrada and thanked him for his country's decision to follow the U.S. in announcing its intention to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

Netanyahu added then that he heard the criticism of the plan but that the arrangements "guarantee personal safety for those who exit Israel".

Guatemala was also one of nine countries that voted against a United Nations resolution condemning US President Donald Trump's original December 6 decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
