What are some consequences of Saturday's attack: Security in Kabul has been further tightened, while some foreign organizations are rethinking their presence in Afghanistan amid the recent spate of violence.

A spokesman from the public health ministry said the dead and injured were being brought to city hospitals.

According to the Afghan Interior Ministry, the ambulance exploded at 12:45 pm.

"The majority of the dead in the attack are civilians, but of course we have military casualties as well", Rahimi said.

He added that four suspects have been arrested and are being questioned.

Stepping up its assistance to Afghan security forces, the USA has increased its air strikes against the Taliban and other militant groups, in a bid to break a stalemate and force the insurgents to the negotiating table.

"President Donald Trump in August committed to putting more US troops in Afghanistan to "[attack] our enemies, [obliterate] ISIS, [crush] al-Qaeda, [prevent] the Taliban from taking over the country".
