At least 95 people were killed and 191 wounded in the lunchtime attack, which was claimed by the Taleban, caused panic in the war-torn capital and overwhelmed hospitals.

Police identified the attacker at a second checkpoint but couldn't stop him before he detonated the explosives near the old Ministry of the Interior building, Rahimi said.

Yesterday's attack was in a heavily protected parts of the city, close to foreign embassies and government buildings, and was the worst atrocity since a truck carrying explosives detonated outside the German embassy killing 150 people in May.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which injured 30 police officers and 205 citizens. Afghan security forces have struggled to combat the Taliban since the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014.
