Amazon has shortened the list to 20 cities to locate HQ2, the company's second world headquarters operation and Pennsylvania has two cities that made the cut.

Austin and Dallas are the on the list of 20 cities now vying for what's known as Amazon's HQ2. "In Dallas-Fort Worth (the nation's fastest-growing housing market) as well as Houston, San Antonio and Charlotte, prices can be just one-third of those in the superstar cities". The North Texas pitch included at least 35 local sites identified as having building potential that matched Amazon's wishes.

The company said it plans to spend more than $5 billion on construction and to hire up to 50,000 workers.

"I'm happy to have them here", she said of Amazon, but is also happy HQ2 won't "be in the P.N. Dub", using a colloquial term for the Pacific Northwest. "Think of it this way, they can essentially take over the assets of Target here in Minneapolis as a better way to add a second headquarters or it might be at the time a third headquarters", said Munster.

Los Angeles was the only California city that Amazon selected to move through to the next stage of the decision process. Gov.

Brail, for one, praised Toronto for not getting sucked into offering big tax breaks or other incentives, which she argues are "great for Amazon" but bad for everyone else.

Amazon's decision came one day after Apple said it would bring home almost all of the cash it now holds overseas, build a new campus for tech support by the end of the year, and create more than 20,000 jobs in the process.

Last year, Amazon received bids from 238 cities and regions from across 54 states, provinces, districts and territories across North America.

In the months since Amazon announced its search, a cottage industry has emerged to handicap the odds of success for each city based on the company's stated criteria.

While they didn't make the shortlist, quite a few cities deserve an "A for effort" in their quest to attract Amazon. Even more astonishing, they've booked 233,000 nights at Seattle-area hotels for visiting "Amazonians" and other guests.

He said he was pleased to see Toronto on the list, but felt it offered both advantages and disadvantages: Canada's immigration system is a plus, but Amazon also has "a history of trying to push pretty hard for less regulation and less tax, so Canada would tend to be less attractive on that front". Boston's cost of living is comparable to Seattle and lower than New York City or Washington, D.C. From a tech standpoint, Boston offers 2,500 miles of throughout the city. Amazon has said it's seeking a highly educated labor pool and nearby universities. "We look forward to working with their team in this next round to convince them that our unrivaled sites, workforce, education system, and quality of life are the best fit for their planned growth".

Just making Amazon's top 20 list won't bring jobs or investment to the city. Amazon has several of its businesses headquartered, here, including its Amazon Web Services, Alexa Internet and Twitch, its live-streaming videogame platform.

The company had stipulated it wanted to be near a metropolitan area with more than 1 million people; be able to attract top technical talent; be within 45 minutes of an worldwide airport; have direct access to mass transit; and be able to expand the headquarters to as much as 8 million square feet in the next decade.
