US sees most active flu season since 2009 ‘swine’ pandemic
In their latest weekly report Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the flu is now widespread in every USA state except for Hawaii. It's what some have called the worst flu season in 10 years. Diane Woolard, the director of the department's Division of Surveillance and Investigations, said the department expects to see widespread flu activity for several more weeks. "Flu season starts to wind down by late March but we still see cases all the way through May", Mangino says.
The most recent numbers through January 20 - reports are typically a week behind - show 2,530 cases in Montana with 353 hospitalizations and 20 deaths. He noted that California and the West Coast have had four times as many people hospitalized as in 2014-15, while Minnesota has had twice as many and NY and the Northeast "are beginning to catch up".
"2 weeks ago we saw 150 people in three days and a majority of those were flu like symptom cases", Cassie Romine, Certified Nurse Practitioner at KMC Med Assist, said.
This year, the number of people looking for help after having gotten sick due to the flu is way higher than the one reported in 2009 - when the whole country witnessed the swine flu pandemic.
Area county health departments are also reporting an increase of flu cases this season compared with past year.
