Just like any disco ball down here on Earth's surface, the intention is to reflect light and create a attractive light show which the company's CEO, Peter Beck, hopes will be seen by everyone "no matter where you are in the world, rich or in poverty, in conflict or at peace".
Rocket Lab founder Peter Beck told the Guardian the Humanity Star was meant to be a "reminder to all on Earth about our fragile place in the universe" and would "create a shared experience for everyone on the planet".
What's being described as a "giant disco ball" was launched into space last week from a New Zealand sheep and cattle farm, and astronomers are miffed, the Guardian reports.
The satellite was launched on Saturday from Rocket Lab's launch complex on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula, atop a low-priced Electron rocket. Disgruntled astronomers can at least take heart on Humanity Star's eventual demise: Its orbit will be marred by gravity after nine months or so and burn up upon re-entry into the planet's atmosphere, "leaving no trace in space or on Earth".
Astronomers around the world have expressed anger after space exploration startup Rocket Lab sent the "Humanity Star" into orbit, a three-foot-wide sphere fitted with 65 reflective panels.
Another referred to the satellite, which Rocket Labs say will look like a "bright flashing shooting star" when viewed from Earth, as "celestial graffiti".
But many astrophysicists disagree.

"It might have been cute to do this in the late 1950s", he wrote, "But in 2018 it feels to me like yet another invasion of my personal universe, another flashing item asking for eyeballs".
Sharing his disappointment about the Humanity star launch, Easther said, This one instance won't be a big deal but the idea of it becoming commonplace, especially at larger scales, would bring astronomers out into the street.
"The goal is make people look up and realize they are on a rock in a giant universe", Beck said. "It's definitely a reminder of our fragile place in the universe, because it's infesting the very thing that we urgently need to cherish".
