At least 30 people drowned when their migrant boat capsized off war-torn Yemen this week, the United Nations has said, adding that it had received reports of gunfire being used against those on board.

The International Organization for Migration said the vessel is believed to have been operated by "unscrupulous smugglers" who tried "to extort more money" from the migrants.

The boat turned back and "capsized amid reports of gunfire being used against the passengers", it said, adding that it was working with the Yemeni coastguard to try to establish what happened.

The agency issued a statement Friday, saying the overcrowded boat had more than 150 Ethiopians and Somalis when it overturned just after leaving a port near Aden earlier this week. It and partner organizations have been helping survivors with food, water and medical help.

"Yemen is no exception; we are deeply troubled by reports of this latest incident".

Despite the war in Yemen, more than 87,000 migrants and refugees risked their lives previous year seeking to reach the country by boat from the Horn of Africa, the agency said.

"Yemen is one of the most risky places in the world, it's in the middle of a bad conflict, on the verge of starvation, with a cholera epidemic, and so on, and yet refugees and migrants continue to arrive", UNHCR's spokesman William Spindler said.

Some later seek to flee again, putting their lives in the hands of people smugglers.

"Amid ongoing hostilities and crushing restrictions imposed by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition, many people who came to Yemen to flee conflict and repression elsewhere are now being forced yet again to flee in search of safety. Some are dying in the process".

The almost three-year-old war in Yemen, pitting Houthi insurgents against a Saudi-backed military coalition, also has contributed to a reverse migration back to Africa.
