Melbourne, Jan 26 Tens of thousands of people marched across Australia today in an "Invasion Day" protest calling for a rethink of the national day they say is offensive to indigenous people.
The Koorie Youth Council executive earlier accused broadcaster Neil Mitchell of being a racist during an awkward interview on live radio.
"We recognise that the history of European settlement in Australia has been complex and tragic for indigenous Australians", he said in a recent speech.
'This country does not deserve a day of national celebration in any capacity, ' he said.
In Melbourne, protesters wearing traditional face paint, standing up Indigenous flags and holding signs and placards with anti-colonisation and "Change the Date" messages flooded the streets around the Parliament building.
Other slogans included "colonisation", "justice", "we are still here", "sovereignty", and "day of mourning".
More than 5000 are expected at a rally outside the Victorian Parliament and similar numbers will walk in Sydney, starting from The Block in Redfern.
Former senator Meg Lees says she'll be spending Australia Day watching the cricket at Adelaide Oval after being appointed an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia, but recognises the date doesn't please all Australians.
"The idea here is to engage the general public because our political spectrum around the country, except for maybe the Greens party. ignore the calls of Aboriginal people", he told AAP ahead of the march.

"People need to be educated on why our culture doesn't feel inclusive on this day", he said.
'It's a great day and a day we celebrate this remarkable nation of ours, ' Mr Turnbull said.
Speaking at a function before the announcement of Professor Michelle Yvonne Simmons as the Australian of the Year, Thurston believes once Australians are more informed about why the date is hurtful to indigenous people, change will happen.
'The overwhelming majority of Australians are celebrating Australia Day like we are here today.
"There were many wrongs done in the past which we seek to close today, we seek to close the gap".
