"It has been pretty much a dream summer - a summer I couldn't have hoped for really", Cummins said after his career-best one-day global figures of 4-24 in Australia's three-wicket win against England on Friday. A couple of the rookies delivered - Dawid Malan finished as England's leading run scorer, with 383, while Chris Woakes showed promise as he took 10 wickets - but England were outfought, outthought and outplayed throughout the series.

Travis Head will open the Australian innings with David Warner in the absence of Aaron Finch who has a hamstring strain.

For England, it's Tom Curran, not David Willey, in for Liam Plunkett.

But come the fourth ODI at Adelaide on Australia Day, they hit back by castling one England batsman after another on a helpful track.

Australia will take on England in the fourth ODI tomorrow at the Adelaide Oval. His late surge enabled England to reach a total which had seemed out of their reach until the final few overs. His career strike rate is 130, the best of any player in the history of ODI cricket with an average of more than 30.

Finch had been one of Australia's few shining lights, making centuries in the first two games.

The hosts were set for victory right from the early going, after sending England in to bat and reducing them to 8-5 - the third-lowest score in a 50-over match at which the fifth wicket has fallen -thanks to the relentless attack of Pat Cummins (4-24) and Josh Hazlewood (3-39).

"Australia Day here, we talk about being a big game and. we didn't want it to turn into a whitewash". Jason Roy drove Hazelwood loosely to point in the very second delivery of the day while Joe Root was caught after only managing a top edge while attempting to pull Cummins. He put on 51 for the seventh wicket with Moeen Ali (33) and 60 for the ninth wicket with Tom Curran, whose 35 showed a lot of composure for a man in only his second one-day worldwide. So much so that the Australian selectors must have felt pretty silly having selected bowlers other than that pair.

Woakes, though, played another excellent innings, in vastly different circumstances to the first three matches, working the ball around and then hitting out powerfully when the bowlers strayed into his scoring zones.

Head has teased previously but been unable to put it together - as evidenced of his inability to debut at Test level despite Australia's shallow batting reservoir.

When Jos Buttler was out to one of the balls of the summer, a Hazlewood seamer that pitched on the off stump before prancing away and gifting Paine another catch, England had lost four wickets in as many overs. Two superb unbeaten knocks drove England to a 2-0 series lead and the tourists benefited from Root doing what he does best: displaying world class acumen with the bat.
