Wozniacki and Halep have been ranked amongst the world's best for a number of years but neither player has tasted success at a Grand Slam.

Caroline Wozniacki claimed her maiden Grand Slam title with an epic 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 win over Simona Halep in the Australian Open women's final on Saturday.

Halep first rose to her current heights in October past year, while Wozniacki debuted in top spot in 2010.

Both occasions happened on the same day with the first time was during the men's wheelchair final. But Halep upped the aggression, losing just four points on serve en route to breaking back and sending the opening set into a tie-break. She got tight from the position of a set and a break up and the free swinging Ostapenko with nothing to lose took advantage of the favourite with everything on the line.

It's been two different roads to this point.

Meanwhile, Wozniacki has enjoyed a slightly more comfortable run to the final, overpowering Elise Mertens in straight sets during the penultimate round. The trainers took her blood pressure and checked her pulse, while Halep put an ice-wrapped towel around her neck.

Both had to show those qualities on their progress through the draw, with Halep becoming the first player in the Open era to reach a slam final having saved match points in multiple matches, while Wozniacki recovered from 1-5 15-40 against Jana Fett in round two.

Simona Halep has rallied to capture the second set 6-3 to level the women's final at one set apiece. That was kind of hard and tough mentally. I got really tight at 5-4.

Wozniacki, runner-up to Kim Clijsters in 2009 and Serena Williams in 2014, has also benefited from her time on the big stage. 9-7 victory over her German opponent. "I think it's been a great two weeks so far". The World No. 1 and 2 have lived up to seeding and are both equally favoured.

A win on Saturday will move Wozniacki over Halep in the world rankings, a storyline that the Danish player said is "cool" on top of all the other drama, per the tournament's official Twitter account. I started not very well with an ankle injury but I am glad to play a Grand Slam final. For the Australian Open title and for a first career Grand Slam.
