B'luru: Bellandur lake catches fire due to chemical accumulation
A huge plume of fire was spotted emanating seemingly spontaneously from the severely-polluted Bellandur lake on Friday morning. The reason behind the fire still remains to be ascertained, even though the fire was doused later.
"Actual cause of the fire is not known.It started from the defence area. Officials of the KLCDA are there on the spot".
According to Defence officials, a strong contingent of 5,000 army jawans of the ASC centre led by Major General N S Rajpurohit doused the fire in the lake. The fire department had a tough time controlling the blaze. They had put the fire to get fresh crop to feed their cattle. Some areas which are away from the waterbody is still burning. "Once summer comes the grass becomes dry and people burn the grass to harvest new growth, this is a common practice in forest areas also", The News Minute quoted Garg as saying. Since 2015, the lake has caught fire four times - including on February 16 and May 7 previous year. The Varthur lake also had caught fire in May, 2017 when some garbage was set ablaze.
The National Green Tribunal which had taken a suo moto case after a similar fire caught its attention had come down heavily on the state government and its agencies and had asked them to take necessary action for reviving the lake.

What causes the lake to catch fire? "It does seem like a methane burst due to the increasing pollution in the lake. But, we can not reach the place of the fire which is in the middle of the wetlands", said an official. In 2015, the lake had turned into a frothy, foam-filled water body due to the high concentration of pollutants in the water.
