Canadian pharmaceutical billionaire couple Barry and Honey Sherman were murdered in a targeted killing, Toronto police investigators said on Friday in their first detailed comments on the case since the couple's bodies were found on December 15. The couple's hands were not tied when they were found. The post-mortem examination concluded that both deaths were caused by "ligature neck compression", signaling a type of strangulation.

She said they were last seen alive in the evening hours of Wednesday Dec. 13 and were not heard from again until their bodies were found late Friday morning.

Mr Sherman, who had a PhD.in astrophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was chairman of the closely held Toronto-based generic-drug maker and was ranked by Forbes as Canada's 12th-richest person with a net worth of about $3 billion (€2 billion).

Homicide Det. -Sgt. Susan Gomes said Friday that the couple were found hanging by belts from a poolside railing in a semi-seated position. "The thought once came to my mind, why didn't they just hire someone to knock me off?"

Gomes said there are no signs of forced entry at access points of the home.

Gomes said Friday that from the start, investigators were open-minded as they considered the evidence before them. Homicide detectives take over the investigation.

Police have "an extensive list of people we're looking forward to speaking to", she said. "Each of the three manners (double suicide, homicide-suicide and double homicide), the options provided to us, were all equally considered as the evidence presented itself".

No rope was discovered on the scene and police have not yet confirmed this detail.

The Sherman family's own investigative team believes it was actually the work of multiple killers, sources tell the news outlet.
