Chinese smartphone shipments declined in 2017 for the first time ever

China's smartphone market is heading into a recession faster than expected, as shipments of Chinese smartphones ushered in an overall decline for the first time in 2017, Yicai.com reported. "Shipments went down 14 percent to just under 113 million units", Singapore-based market research firm said late on Thursday. According to research firm Canalys, for all of a year ago such deliveries declined 4% from 2016's figure to hit 459 million units. While fourth quarter shipments fell for Oppo (-16% year-over-year) and Vivo (-7%), during the three months the pair counted shipments of 19 million and 17 million units, respectively. For all of 2017, the company shipped over 90 million units. Honor's performance has complemented Huawei's success, by contributing more than half of Huawei's total shipments.

Despite the dip in the fourth quarter, both Oppo and Vivo saw double-digit growth in 2017. "Failure to drive footfall, however, will threaten Oppo and Vivo's ongoing channel transformation and render the exercise futile".

"The declining Chinese market will have a detrimental impact on those Chinese vendors that have been heavily relying on their home market", said Hattie He, Research Analyst at Canalys. "Meizu, for example, who used to have certain market scale, has seen a substantial decrease", Jia told China Business News (CBS), before adding that in 2018 the top five vendors would dominate the mobile phone market and further squeeze out smaller players.
