And just like last month, their troubles began with a traffic stop.

Mariah Jiron, 42, of Hyde Park, Vermont, was driving the truck but was not charged.

On Dec. 19, 2017, the Jirons were stopped in nearby York County with some $300,000 worth of marijuana. The deputies who approached the couple's Toyota Tacoma smelled a pungent marijuana odor, NPR reported. The couple was pulled over on Tuesday morning for tailgating after a sheriff's deputy determined that "reasonable, articulable suspicion was obtained that criminal activity was afoot".

Detectives believe the Jirons are traveling back to California after posting bail in Nebraska in an incident this week where they were allegedly found with $18,000 in cash, raw marijuana and evidence of sales.

The two were detained and booked at the Lancaster County Jail for possession of money "used or meant to be used to facilitate a violation" of laws against controlled substances.

The driver of the truck, a woman identified as the couple's daughter, was released without charges.

Home sales down despite strong Christmas at John Lewis

The husband and wife, who live in Clearlake Oaks, Calif., are by now familiar with Nebraska correctional accommodations.

Berry said he couldn't say whether the Jirons feel they were targeted by law enforcement for the stop. Multiple containers of concentrated THC also were found, officials said. The couple said they were coming from California and planned to give the weed as Christmas presents to friends and family in Boston and Vermont.

They told authorities they were driving to Vermont and didn't know it was illegal to transport pot through the Cornhusker state.

It should be noted that Barbara Jiron's first court appearance in York County Court is scheduled for today (Wednesday, Jan. 10) at 2 p.m. The couple has pending charges for possessing marijuana with the intent to deliver.

"Justin is in no way connected to this allegation other than by relation", Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George, wrote in an email to the Burlington Free Press.
