He told the 's Andrew Marr Show: "When you have in the middle of an area where there is a lot of housing stress, many people rough sleeping".

Separately, Labour said it would give local authorities power to take over homes being deliberately kept empty by owners.

Corbyn said homelessness in the United Kingdom was "disgraceful" and "wholly unnecessary" as it emerged 4,751 people were living on the streets on any given night in England during the Autumn months.

Mr Corbyn told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that he would "immediately purchase 8,000 properties across the country to give immediate housing to those people that are now homeless".

Corbyn on Sunday unveiled a new policy to tackle rough sleeping after figures released this week showed the number of people living on the streets is the highest since records began.

Under the plans, a Labour government would strike a deal with local housing associations to make properties available to rough sleepers as soon as they fall vacant.

The new figure is double that set out by Labour in its manifesto previous year, which promised to secure 4,000 properties for people who are homeless.

JEREMY CORBYN today vowed to buy up houses for homeless people to live in a scheme which could cost billions.

Statistics published last week suggested that 4,751 people were rough sleeping in England in autumn 2017, a 15 per cent rise on the year before and more than double the figure in 2012.

However, Conservative Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington said the increase in homelessness was attributable to a number of different factors and reiterated the government had pledged to curb the issue over the next decade.

'That's why the Government has set up a very ambitious target - we have pledged to halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eliminate it by 2027'.

He said homeless people "beg to get money for a night shelter, stay in the night shelter or a hostel", according to The Telegraph.
