Tipu Sultan
After Karnataka, a row over Tipu Sultan reached Delhi after the Mysuru ruler's portrait was unveiled at Delhi Assembly along with 69 other national heroes who worked for nation building and freedom.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Friday, had unveiled the portraits of 70 people who are considered pivotal to India's struggle for Independence on the occasion of Republic Day. According to officials, each freedom fighter represented one assembly constituency of Delhi.
Like in the southern state, BJP rose in revolt against the portrait of Tipu Sultan saying controversial figures should be kept out while Delhi Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and AAP defended it saying his portrait is featured in the Constitution. "Attaining freedom was very hard, but looking at recent events, it seems that maintaining freedom is even more hard", said Mr. Kejriwal. He said the "atmosphere of violence" is being created everywhere which is making it tough for many people to lead a normal life. BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma said people's sentiments would be hurt if the portrait of a "controversial" personality like Tipu was put up. Farmers, traders and labourers are troubled.

Elsewhere, the Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel sought to remind the BJP that the courageous 18th century martyr's photo was there even inside the pages of the Indian constitution. Referring to Bharatiya Janata Party, Goel asserted,"I want to tell them (BJP) that the Constitution of India also carries a picture of Tipu Sultan on its page number 144". It is becoming tough to live a normal life and to do business. Till there is peace, there can be no progress in the country.
These portraits are two-and-a-half feet long, and one- and-a-half feet wide mentioning the description of the personality in brief and their contribution towards the nation.
Taking a dig at the BJP, AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the government had asked the saffron party, which has 3 MLAs inside the assembly, to come up with a name from their party but it failed to provide any. Maintaining peace and harmony is the first job of any government. "So, either the people who fought the British to free the country and wrote this Constitution were "gaddaar" (traitors) or they (BJP) are the ones", he was quoted by the NDTV.
