'Code red' storm halts Dutch trains and flights

Germany and the Netherlands woke up to scenes of devastation Friday after a powerful storm flattened buildings, disrupted travel and killed at least eight people.

Italy was hit with strong winds of up to 200 kilometers per hour, causing property damage, train and ferry cancellations.

Six people died in Germany, including two firefighters killed by falling trees and debris.

A 64-year-old man fell eight metres (26 feet) while he was working to secure the roof of a house.

A 59-year-old man was killed by a falling tree and several people were injured in similar incidents throughout the country following the arrival of storm in the morning.

Train service was halted in Germany as wind gusts up to 90 miles per hour made that method of travel too unsafe as well, according to BBC.com.

Separately, Dutch insurers reported 90 million euros in damages across The Netherlands, where train services were on Friday also slowly creaking back into gear.

Meanwhile, baby Anton was born during the storm in his parents' vehicle in the western city of Cologne as traffic chaos unleashed by the extreme weather stopped them from getting to the clinic in time.
