Marin Cilic Roger Federer Australian Open final

Marin Cilic Roger Federer Australian Open final

ROGER Federer is a grand slam champion for the 20th time in his career, overcoming adversity to defeat Marin Cilic in five sets.

And Federer's uncontrollable blubbering during the post-match presentation conjured up a moment possibly more magical than the Swiss maestro's 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 3-6 6-1 triumph, as the capacity Melbourne Park crowd, realising he could no longer speak, burst into a minute-and-a-half of applause and cheers that seemed like it went for five. The world number six, CIlic, fought back well though and should be applauded for his part in this incredible final.

Despite failing to take a set point opportunity when leading 4-5 in the second set, Cilic pounced in the tie-break with a superb forehand victor to bring up two set points at 6-4.

After Cilic caught up and forced a fifth set, he had two chances for an early break in the first game that would have given him the lead and continued his momentum.

After a strong start in the third set, Cilic stumbled, and Federer took control for the rest of the match.

"I'm so happy. It's unbelievable, " Federer said after the match.

The men's final was played under the roof of Rod Laver Arena due to extreme heat in Melbourne, with some pundits feeling an indoor match worked in Federer's favour. Federer ran away with the first set after that, opening up a 4-0 lead to begin the match before Cilic could even win a game.

Roger outplayed Marin in the ace department, hitting 24 against 16 from the Croat (65-49 in service winners), and he managed to pull better percentages on both the first and second serve to play against nine beak points.

Federer's renaissance has earned him three grand slams in the past 12 months after a five-year drought, emulating the feat of Ken Rosewall who also claimed three after his 35th birthday.

Federer got the vital double break when Cilic netted a forehand, leaving the Swiss to serve out for the championship.

As well as joining Djokovic and Emerson as the only men to win six Australian Open trophies, Federer also emulated Laver by winning his fourth Grand Slam title after his 30th birthday.

"On a fast court, Federer is my favourite every time".

In the first set, it was all Federer. I'd like to thank Marin, another great tournament.

Cilic, who came into the match ranked sixth overall, had kind words for Federer afterward.

Cilic said that his goal in 2018 is to finish in the Top 5 and win a Grand Slam this year.

Federer broke for 4-2 in the third and then saw out the set to move back in front before his wayward display in the fourth was seized on by Cilic.

In addition, he joined Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall as only the third player in the Open era who collected four Grand Slams after turning 30, another proof of his fantastic longevity and timeless quality.

After serving out at love, his celebration was delayed slightly by an unsuccessful challenge from Cilic on match point.

Past year at Wimbledon, he was hobbled by a blister on his foot and couldn't play his normally attacking style of tennis.
