Brexit minister David Davis will set out the government's position on a transition period in a speech, looking to offer something for both those who want to keep close ties with the European Union after leaving and those who want a more radical break. Speaking at a container port in northeast England, Davis said that the transition would preserve "the existing structure of rules and regulations including, crucially, on continued access to each other's markets on current terms".

British Brexit negotiators are expected to launch fortnightly rounds of talks in Brussels from as early as next week with the aim of agreeing a swift deal on a transition period, European Union diplomats said on Friday.

Only minutes into his visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump heaped praise on Prime Minister Theresa May after months of tension in the "special relationship".

He said the chancellor's remarks had "overshadowed" his main point that May wants a deep trade deal with the EU.
