A planned speech by Theresa May next month setting out the Government’s vision on Brexit has been postponed – and could be scrapped altogether

Brexit minister David Davis will set out the government's position on a transition period in a speech, looking to offer something for both those who want to keep close ties with the European Union after leaving and those who want a more radical break. But, to allow companies to conform to new situation, y will seek to agree on a transitional period - "Implementation phase" is expression used by British Government - in which status quo will continue to be largely in force, for a limited time that Brussels proposes that it be until end of 2020.

- Citizens rights "moral issue" - Davis replied that in the future Britain would no longer be bound by the rules of membership of the EU's custom union that are now preventing it from negotiating trade deals with nations outside the EU.

But Mr Hammond's remark on Thursday that the UK's trade relations with the European Union would change only "very modestly" after Brexit sparked anger among Tory Eurosceptics and earned him a rebuke from Downing Street.

Hard-line Brexit backer Jacob Rees-Mogg has already expressed alarm at the transition plans.

Mr Davis said that, because there was broad agreement already, he was confident of reaching an interim accord on the transition by the time European Union leaders hold a Brussels summit on March 22-23.

Speaking at a container port in northeast England, Davis said that the transition would preserve "the existing structure of rules and regulations including, crucially, on continued access to each other's markets on current terms".

British Brexit negotiators are expected to launch fortnightly rounds of talks in Brussels from as early as next week with the aim of agreeing a swift deal on a transition period, European Union diplomats said on Friday.

Only minutes into his visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump heaped praise on Prime Minister Theresa May after months of tension in the "special relationship".

He said the chancellor's remarks had "overshadowed" his main point that May wants a deep trade deal with the EU.

"I saw there was an avalanche warning when we came in yesterday - and the foreign secretary isn't even here", Hammond said.

Tories are calling on the prime minister to outline her Brexit vision and unconfirmed reports are circulating that she may face a leadership challenge. It will not, however, have a seat at the decision-making table during that time.

Another voter said Britain must "stand up for themselves" in negotiations.

He conceded that in politics, there were "different views", adding: "There will be arguments about the tactics but they will change, the options available to us will change throughout the course of the negotiations". Some supporters have started to get ready for a fightback against what they call "ultra-Remainers" who they accuse of trying to stop the divorce. "I would expect it before the end of March", Davis told a parliamentary committee when asked when the terms of the transition deal would be agreed.
