Hyeon Chung Roger Federer Australian Open
Defending champion Roger Federer on Friday reached the final of the Australian Open after South Korea's Hyeon Chung quit in pain trailing 1-6, 2-5. Chung, the first Korean - male or female - to reach a Grand Slam semifinal, was forced to retire with an injury that was later revealed to be severe blisters.
Chung, 21, conceded his semi-final against Switzerland's Roger Federer midway through the second set at Melbourne Park on Friday night.
Federer had been nearly flawless, toying with his inexperienced opponent and putting on a clinic which ended in anticlimactic fashion after only 62 minutes.
"I've played with blisters in the past, and it hurts a lot.at some point, it is just too much", Federer said.
"In the second set I started to feel he was getting a bit slower, fighting with the blisters". Because he has played so many matches in the row, I think that's why it was a build-up. She saved match points against not one, but two opponents at Melbourne Park - Lauren Davis in the third round, and two-time major victor Angelique Kerber in the semifinal.
"It's better to stop, that's why this one feels bittersweet".
