South Korea Hospital Blaze Kills 41 People
At least 31 people were killed and 70 more were injured when a fire broke out at Sejong Hospital in South Korea's South Gyeongsang Province.
At least 37 people are dead and more than 140 injured after a fire swept through a hospital in South Korea.
There were 194 patients in the hospital when the fire first began and all 78 individuals in the seniors' ward were evacuated.
The head of the foundation that operates the hospital, Son Kyung-cheol, also said in a televised briefing Friday afternoon that sprinklers were not installed in the hospital as it was not legally required. Initial reports have suggested the high death toll may have been caused by toxic gas, as numerous victims, who were also old patients, seem not to have been able to escape in time.
Jang Yeong-jae, a surviving patient, said he was on the second floor when nurses screamed "Fire!" in the hallway and urged people to leave through the emergency exits. Firefighters and hospital workers evacuated patients from an annexe that operated as a nursing home, carrying some of them on their backs.
Sejong Hospital has been operating since 2008.
Another 61 suffered light injuries, a spokesman said, adding the death toll could rise further.

Pope Francis is sending his condolences to the victims of the South Korean hospital fire and is encouraging emergency personnel as they try to help survivors. The director of the hospital said the current law did not require the building to have a sprinkler system.
The official says the cause of the fire was under investigation. Three of the nine medical staff on duty at the time died in the fire.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in called an emergency meeting with advisers and demanded an immediate probe into the cause of the blaze.
Several recent fires in South Korea have been deadly.
