But Davis, Cooper's attorney, criticized the Broward State's Attorney's Office reliance on "a disgraced and disbarred convicted felon", the Times reported.

"Joy Cooper is prohibited from performing any official act, duty or function of public office; from receiving any pay or allowance; and from being entitled to any of the emoluments or privileges of public office during the period of this suspension", Scott's order said.

The tale started in May 2012 when undercover agents created a fictitious real estate company and hired Koslow to represent them and reach out to Cooper to find a development site in Hallandale Beach.

The charges stem from a meeting during the summer of 2012 where Cooper met up with two men she thought were wealthy landowners from California willing to fund her re-election campaign in exchange for pushing their construction project through to the city commission. The agents recorded the meetings, and Cooper told them she had two other people working with her to work their influence.

The developers came to his house with $8,000 in cash - a Dunkin' Donuts bag stuffed with $100 bills.

In her campaign treasury report, Cooper listed the donors as "teachers" and one "retiree". "You guys have been great", she allegedly told them.

A month after her 2012 victory, Cooper met with the undercover agents and Koslow, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, two of the check donations - totaling $1,000 - were made to the campaign of then-Commissioner William Julian.

"I can guarantee you that I will overwhelmingly battle these claims in court", Cooper said in a readied proclamation got by the Sun Sentinel.

Last August, Koslow pleaded guilty to hiding the source of $220,000 in illegal gambling and drug dealing.

After a series of transactions, the agents revealed their identities to Koslow in August 2013 - but didn't arrest him.

Cooper could face up to five years in prison for the felony charges. The longtime Broward attorney began working undercover himself, assisting the FBI agents in their investigation of other politicians and lobbyists.

Eric Fordin, a developer, told the Sun Sentinel he was "shocked" by the allegations against Cooper.

On Nov. 9, he provided a sworn testimony about the alleged campaign finance scheme with Cooper, and investigators reignited the case.

Gov. Rick Scott issued an official request suspending Joy Cooper, the 57-year-old leader of Hallandale Beach, a city only north of Miami, after she was blamed for tolerating unlawful battle commitments through previous lawyer Alan Koslow.

Bad habit Mayor Keith London will assume control over Cooper's obligations while she is suspended.
