Japan maintains US military helicopters fly over school in Okinawa despite US denial
The U.S. Marine Corps flew helicopters above an elementary school next to a U.S. air base in Okinawa on Thursday despite promising Japan it would try to avoid such flights after a window from a CH-53E chopper fell on the school grounds last month, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.
The ministry, for its part, has installed security cameras at the school and sent local defence bureau officials to watch for any USA military aircraft flying over.
In response to a huge local outcry and protests from Japan, the USA forces promised that their aircraft will avoid airspace over schools as much as possible.
Students were in class at the time, school officials said. But it said it instructed all crew aboard aircraft taking off and landing at the Futenma air base to avoid flying over schools to the "greatest extent possible", according to the ministry. On Friday, he said he would continue to urge the U.S.to not fly over the school.
Footage from security cameras set up after that incident reportedly caught Thursday's flyover.
Despite the insistence of USA forces that they are avoiding such overflights as much as possible and none occurred January 18, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera presented them with evidence the reverse was true.
In response to a string of incidents involving US military aircraft, the Okinawa prefectural assembly on January 19 unanimously adopted a protest resolution and a written opinion to the Japanese government, the USA government and US forces in Japan. Jerry Martinez and Lt. Gen. Lawrence Nicholson, III Marine Expeditionary Force commander.
Onodera said the US military denied the flyover took place when asked about it by his office. Marine officials did not respond to Stars and Stripes' requests for comment on Friday.

But the allegation was denied by the Marines, saying its helicopters did not fly over the Futenma No. 2 Elementary School.
Okinawa's anti-base Gov. Takeshi Onaga said he was outraged by the incident, according to the Asahi newspaper. Onaga plans to visit Tokyo to lodge a protest with the Japanese government.
The Japanese government on Friday reasserted its claim that USA military helicopters had flown over an elementary school in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.
Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga also expressed strong disappointment over what he sees as a "broken promise" that the USA military would avoid flying over the school as much as possible since the December incident.
"In that case, they should show us the flight route data", he said.
Local concerns have been deepening over continuing accidents and mishaps involving US aircraft in the southern Japanese island prefecture, where the bulk of USA military forces in Japan are stationed.
The falling-window incident on December 13 was followed by emergency landings by Marine helicopters on January 6 and January 8.
The Okinawa prefectural assembly on Friday adopted documents demanding the suspension of the operation of the Futenma base by February next year, and the removal of the Marines from the prefecture, as numerous incident-prone aircraft fly out of the base.
