Ford patent details system for autonomous police cars

Ford Autonomous Police Car Will Give Chase to Speedsters, Issue Tickets

While it's just a movie, the world could be on the verge of witnessing the rise of the first robot police officers. As reported by CNET, Ford was recently granted a patent that describes a fully autonomous police auto. The autonomous auto can work in cooperation with a human officer or function by itself.

Ford already supplies law enforcement with fleets of vehicles built for police officers and first responders, including a modified F-150 truck and a pursuit-rated hybrid.

That said, it seems Ford might be interested in bringing the world of self-driving cars to the USA police force. However, it also requires the use of connected sensors to tell when road laws have been violated. After verifying their identity, the vehicle will then be able to issue either a warning or a ticket, presumably depending on the severity of the violation. That's quite smart, but don't expect this autonomous vehicle to chase insane drivers around town.

Keep in mind that just because a patent was filed, it doesn't mean Ford intends to build out this technology.

The autonomous police vehicle also comes with built-in AI that will be advanced enough to determine whether a driver's infraction warrants a citation or simply a stern talking to, which presumably sounds like when KITT explains Silicon Valley to Michael Knight.

The United States of America is a technologically advanced nation, but it's not always on the forefront of some changes.

It's also worth saying that this type of technology is already being used in countries like Singapore and Dubai, so the USA wouldn't be alone. It can function on its own, with police in the auto, or in conjunction with surveillance cameras and roadside sensors. It's an impressive machine because if a criminal makes a run for it, the devices will release a drone to track the culprit until human police officers arrive.
