Iowa State named Nate Scheelhaase its running backs coach, the school announced Thursday.
"Nate will be a valuable addition to our staff", said head coach Matt Campbell in a press release. Once Josh Whitman fired Cubit in March 2016 and hired Lovie Smith two days later, Smith kept Phair on staff, but as the program's defensive line coach, a role he held the past two seasons.
Scheelhaase will coach running backs at Iowa State after Louis Ayeni left to join Pat Fitzgerald's staff at Northwestern. Phair worked for Bill Cubit after Beckman was sacked, then was retained under Lovie Smith but as D-Line coach. In 2013 he had one of the best offensive seasons in IL football history, leading the conference in passing yardage (272.7 ypg), total offense (295.2 ypg) and completion percentage (66.7) during his senior campaign, while also breaking the school record for passing efficiency (140.7) to earn All-Big Ten honors.
