Hotel in Kabul comes under attack, hostages reportedly taken

The attack began with a suicide vehicle bomb at the gate of the charity's compound in the eastern city of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. Eleven of the 14 foreigners had been identified as working for an Afghan private airline, KamAir.

The local officials in Nangarhar are saying that a group of insurgents launched a coordinated attack on Save the Children office in the 3rd police district of Jalalabad city at around 9 am on Wednesday.

Glenn Selig, spokesman for Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates, was killed in the weekend Kabul hotel attack, according to a statement from spokesperson for The Publicity Agency and Selig Multimedia Inc., his Florida-based companies.

The US State Dept. confirmed the attack killed four Americans and injured two others.

Another witness said: "It might be a complex attack".

Six gunmen were also killed in the attack, he added.

The Taliban, which attacked the same hotel in 2011, claimed responsibility for the attack, spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement. "All other staff have been safely rescued from the office", Save the Children International chief executive Helle Thorning-Schmidt said, condemning the attack "in the strongest possible terms".

The attack in Jalalabad came just days after Taliban militants struck the a hotel in Kabul, killing some 22 people, including at least 13 foreigners.

The attack underlines how hard operating in Afghanistan has become for humanitarian aid groups, which have faced heavy pressure from armed groups and kidnappers.

The State Department has declined to comment on the identities of those killed in the attack. During a ceremony at Kabul's airport on Wednesday, the bodies of seven Ukrainian citizens were handed over to officials for transfer to Ukraine.

"We could have ended the operation in the morning and killed all the attackers, but there were more than 45 civilians and employees trapped inside", said Mohammed Gulab Mangal, the province's governor.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Afghanistan.
