Former Grand Prix driver Niki Lauda has thwarted an attempt by British Airways owner IAG to snap up his eponymous airline, which ceased flying last month.

"In the early hours of this morning Laudamotion GmbH emerged from a transparent bidding process as the best bidder", the newswire quoted Niki's Austrian and German administrators, Ulla Reisch and Lucas Floether, as saying in a brief joint statement, referring to a company controlled by Lauda.

"Our information is that all employees will receive a job offer", he said.

Former Formula One motor-racing champion Niki Lauda is poised to take back control of the airline that bears his name after fending off a rival bid from British Airways owner IAG SA. IAG resubmitted its bid on January 19, and has been advised today that the bid was unsuccessful.

The racer-turned-entrepreneur had teamed up with Thomas Cook Group Plc's German airline Condor for an earlier bid, and the tour operator said Tuesday it will enter discussions about providing support services for Niki with a view to buying seats from the revived carrier.
