May agrees to extra £44.5M for Calais before Macron summit

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday hailed the strength of Franco-British ties despite Brexit, but warned that he would not allow Britain's financial industry to have privileged access to the European Union single market.

"I want to make sure that the single market is preserved because that is very much the heart of the EU".

"If you want access to the single market, including financial services, be my guest".

May, who was weakened by losing her Conservative Party's parliamentary majority in an election past year, wants to use a summit with President Emmanuel Macron to show Britain still has plenty to offer European Union member states as she negotiates Brexit.

He added that while he does not rule out including the financial sector in a UK-EU trade agreement, the level of market access will not be the same as when being a member of the single market.

"If you want a trade access, it will cover everything, but then it is not full access to the single market and to financial services", Macron told May.

She noted how Britain recognised that as it left the European Union "we will no longer be full members of the single market".

Macron is expected to confirm on Thursday that France will agree in principle to loan the fragile 941-year-old embroidery.

In response to Mr Macron's comments, the Prime Minister - who has rejected the Norway/Canada choice - repeated her position that Britain would leave the EU's single market after Brexit.

On the issue of London, May said it would continue to be "a major global financial centre", insisting that would be to the benefit of the UK, Europe and the global financial system.

The Prime Minister also spelled out her wish for a "good ongoing security relationship with the EU" after Brexit, with all the intelligence chiefs of both France and Britain having met for the first time in history earlier on Thursday.
