French president Emmanuel Macron has said baguettes should be recognised as a cultural treasure and placed on Unesco's Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Calls for the famous breadstick to be awarded the treasured status come after an Italian pizza making style from Naples was awarded protected status a year ago.

The UN cultural body's world heritage committee aims to protect traditions against the effects of globalisation and meets once a year to evaluate nominations.

Speaking to bakers at the Elysee presidential palace in Paris, Macron said: "The baguette is envied around the world".

The traditional baguette is already protected in France under a 1993 law which stipulates that it can be made from only four ingredients: wheat flour, water, yeast and salt.

"When I see the the growing dominance of French supermarkets and convenience stores in the sale of bread, I say to myself that we must act", he told the food news website Atablula.

"The bread is frozen, some of it comes from Romania or who knows where, nothing is carries out in accordance of the rules of art". The organization focuses on cultural elements, such as cuisine, dance, music and crafts. If accepted, the baguette would be in good company on Unesco's lists, which include cultural traditions such as: Summer solstice fire festivals in the Pyrenees, the Tango, Arabic coffee as a symbol of generosity and beer culture in Belgium.

France already has multiple listings, including Alencon lace-making, French-style equitation and the "French gastronomic meal".

However the United Kingdom is one of few countries that has not signed up the system to protect it's heritage and has no entries on the list.
