(Web Desk) - The chocolate hazelnut spread the world has come to love became the centre of chaos in France as police had to be called in after a 70% discount on Nutella caused "riots" as shoppers thronged to supermarkets to make the most of the sale. The supermarket chain reduced 950g jars of Nutella from €4.50 (£3.90) to €1.41 (£1.23).
Video posted online Thursday and testimony from baffled supermarket workers showed long queues forming outside Intermarche supermarkets and chaotic scenes as bargain hunters stormed inside.
"Serious? All that for Nutella?" Another commented: "This is not normal".
It was like an orgy, ' one employee in the northeastern town of Forbach told AFP, asking to remain anonymous.

According to The Local, 700 jars of Nutella were sold in 45 minutes at a Montbrison store, with the supermarket planning to repeat the discount on Friday and Saturday. One customer described shoppers as "like animals". "One woman had her hair pulled... another woman's hand was bleeding. It was terrible", a customer at the Rive-de-Gier supermarket in central France told Le Progres newspaper.
"Today, I solved the problem by limiting the number of pots to three per person. But they went back and forth", said exasperated manager Jean-Marie Daragon.
"We wish to clarify that this promotion was decided unilaterally by the Intermarché brand", it said in a statement.
An estimated 100 million jars of Nutella is consumed in France every year.
