More than 20 White House employees have given interviews to the special counsel in his probe of possible obstruction of justice and Trump campaign ties to Russian election interference, according to a document released Thursday that underscores the breadth of the investigation.

Ken Starr, best known for investigating Whitewater and looking into Bill Clinton's affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky, said Trump's denial of reports he attempted to fire Mueller could become an issue if they were indeed found to be untrue.

When asked if he thought there should be legislative safeguards put in place to prevent Trump from upending Mueller's probe, McCarthy said "I don't think there's a need for legislation right now".

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the report.

"I think he's got a fair prosecutor in Bob Mueller, but I don't think he's got a fair jury", Gowdy said on "Fox News Sunday" about Trump.

"Let's get them out there for everyone to see", Grassley said. But Democrats - led by Sens. Chris Coons of DE and Cory Booker of New Jersey are calling for more protections for special counsels.

"It is more important than ever for Congress to act to protect the independence of the Department of Justice, including the special counsel investigation", said Coons of DE, who partnered with Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., on one of the bills. "These reports make clear that we need to act".

Rosenstein appointed Mueller after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation and is the official overseeing the special counsel.

Graham and three Democratic senators introduced legislation last August that would protect special counsels, including Mueller, by requiring that a panel of federal judges review any action to remove them. In their measure, a special counsel would only be fired "after the court has issued an order finding misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or other good cause".

Sources familiar with the matter told CNN that Mueller had provided Trump's lawyers with possible interview topics including Trump allegedly asking Comey to drop an investigation into Flynn and Trump's outreach to leaders of the intelligence community about the Russian Federation investigation.

"What began as an attempt to discredit the investigator has now devolved into delusional, self-serving paranoia", Schumer said in a Senate floor speech.
