Democrats Probably Won't Force A Shutdown Over Immigration

Senate Democrats gave no indication that they have softened their requirement that any deal to re-open the government must come with a side agreement on immigration. While the Democrats are firm on the spending bill including a legislative fix to protect about 8,00,000 young illegal immigrants, the Republicans remain emphatic that the immigration issue should not be tied to a spending bill.

The House has already passed a "clean" continuing resolution on Thursday, mostly along party lines, to keep the government open through February 16. "But this is not a moment to pat ourselves on the back".

There is a broad consensus, on both sides of the aisle, that DACA and other issues related to illegal immigration require a compromise solution.Bipartisan, bicameral negotiations have been underway for months.

US President Donald Trump marked the first anniversary of his inauguration on Saturday with his government in shutdown, accusing Democrats of taking Americans hostage with their demands and saying they "could have easily made a deal".

Government operations are expected to essentially returning to normal on Tuesday.

For now, the only possible off ramp is a three-week spending bill to fund the government until February 8 that most Democrats say is dead on arrival in the Senate.

Lawmakers have traded bitter recriminations for the failure to pass a stop-gap funding measure, and McConnell once again sought to pin the blame on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., right, and Sen.

Sen. Lamar Alexander also noted "progress" but wouldn't provide details: "We'll know more in two hours", he said around 3 p.m. Sunday after a bipartisan meeting of approximately 20 lawmakers dispersed.

Mr Schumer said that the Republicans had failed to lead, despite controlling Congress and the White House.

It's not clear if Democrats will come around to voting for the funding bill by noon Monday.

There are an estimated 700,000 "Dreamers" whose fates are up in the air.

It is true that the short-term funding bill that advanced in the Senate, called a continuing resolution, needed 60 votes in order to avoid a filibuster.

The top Senate Democrat said he agreed to the dollar figure Trump had thrown out, despite having reservations about the effectiveness of the wall. In this case, Republicans would need nine Democrats to flip.

Minutes after a Senate bill collapsed Friday night, the blame game for the federal government shutdown began. The North Carolina Republican told reporters that Ryan had to understand "the will of his conference and of the majority of the majority" should drive any vote on immigration reform.

Republicans and Democrats have traded bitter recriminations over who is to blame for the failure to pass a stop-gap funding measure by a Jan 20 deadline, a year to the day Mr Donald Trump took office as United States president. He also said, subtly, that he's not bringing up an immigration bill if there's a government shutdown.

The weekend only showed small signs of a shutdown, but as the working week begins, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed, meaning they will be put on temporary unpaid leave.

Officials said that now over one million active-duty military personnel will serve with no lapse, but could not be paid until the shutdown ends.
