The worst clashes yet between UAE-backed southern separatists and forces loyal to the Saudi-based government risk crippling their once united war effort against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen's north.

A DRONE strike today killed seven suspected Al-Qaeda militants in southern Yemen, a security official said.

According to Al Mayadeen TV channel, the fighting has already claimed lives of at least 20 people and injured dozens.

Military units loyal to the government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi were deployed in most areas of Aden amid heightened tensions, the security sources said.

"In Sanaa, there has been a consolidation of the coup d'etat, and here in Aden, there is a coup against the legitimate authorities and the project of the federal state", Daghr said on Facebook.

The Coalition calls on all Yemeni political and social components to be calm and to restrain themselves.

Sunday's rally was called for by the South Transition Council, an autonomous body aimed at overseeing self-governance among southern provinces.

Former Aden governor Aidarous al-Zoubeidi formed the council in May after Hadi fired him the previous month.

It had warned that if Hadi did not accept the demand, its supporters would begin a protest campaign to oust Dagher's government.

Aden, Yemen's second largest city, used to be the capital of the once independent South Yemen before unification in 1990.

Four years later, it launched a separatist rebellion that culminated in its occupation by northern forces.

The Saudi-led coalition has also sent armored vehicles, tanks and ammunition to Ta'izz in a bid to help the mercenaries advance against the Houthis, said a pro-Hadi commander.

Hadi loyalists have been boosted by the Popular Resistance alliance of southern separatists and tribesmen who took up arms after the rebels advanced on their regions.

But Yemen has been torn apart by three years of conflict and the factional fighting in the south compounds the misery.
