Republicans in Congress divided over protecting Mueller from being fired by Trump
Collins made her remarks Sunday on two news talk shows where she was asked to comment on revelations last week that Trump had ordered White House lawyer Don McGahn to fire special counsel Robert Mueller in June but backed off when McGahn threatened to quit rather than carry out the order. Republicans control both chambers of Congress, and many in the party have been reluctant to take a hostile posture toward the president, who holds considerable influence over the conservative base despite his low approval ratings nationally.
Former U.S. Attorney Michael Moore said on CNN Saturday that President Donald Trump would likely try to remove special counsel Robert Mueller from his position - even though doing so would be politically disastrous. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J) would require an extensive judicial process to fire a special counsel. A similar measure was introduced by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chris Coons (D-DE) around the same time.
Graham spoke on ABC's "This Week", Collins appeared on CNN's "State of the Union" and CBS' "Face the Nation", and Short was on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS.
Senator Chuck Schumer of NY, the top Democrat in the Senate, said the report detailing an effort by Trump to fire Mueller in June demonstrated the urgency for Congress to act.
When asked if he thought there should be legislative safeguards put in place to prevent Trump from upending Mueller's probe, McCarthy said "I don't think there's a need for legislation right now".
McCarthy expressed confidence in Mueller but questioned the motivations of some others in the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department who have been involved in the probe, citing the revelations of politically charged texts disparaging Trump.

"The only thing I've seen is cooperation going forward", McCarthy told host Chuck Todd.
