Logan got an Oscar nomination and people are absolutely delighted

The 2018 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, and for the most part, they went as expected.
■The Best Supporting Actress race had several surprises. This year's nomination, for her portrayal of Katharine Graham in The Post, is her 21st. "Mudbound" also scored a nomination for cinematographer Rachel Morrison, who becomes the first female to ever be nominated in the Cinematography category.
The first LotR movie blew everyone away, landing nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Ian McKellen), Best Art Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography. He becomes the fifth black filmmaker nominated for best director, and third to helm a best picture nominee, following Barry Jenkins previous year for Moonlight. He was joined in the category by Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread) and Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.). Allison Janney of "I, Tonya" and Sam Rockwell of "Three Billboards" have also collected those honors for their supporting roles, making them strong Oscar front-runners.
Peele's Get Out script received an original screenplay nod along with The Big Sick, Lady Bird, Shape of Water and Three Billboards.
Willem Defoe may have been nominated for best supporting actor, but the brilliant Florida Project failed to pick up any other nominations. He is only the fifth African American to be nominated for Best Director.

Coming into the race, it seemed that two films, horror-tinged romance The Shape Of Water and the drama-comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri were the ones to beat in this year's Oscar nominations. All hail the Stuhl.
