With temperatures on the rise and gusting winds in the forecast, a red flag warning of elevated wildfire danger goes into effect in mountain and valley areas Saturday evening and continues through Monday.
The service issued a Red Flag Warning Friday for Los Angeles County, San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura County coastal valleys, Ventura County interior valleys, Los Angeles County mountains, Angeles National Forest, Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Ventura County mountains and Los Padres National Forest.
Gusty, dry winds expected to blow into Ventura County on Saturday night will set the stage for unsafe fire conditions as well as warmer temperatures Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
The strongest winds are expected to occur Saturday night and into Sunday as winds reach 20 to 30 miles per hour (mph) and gusts reach up to 45 mph in the Santa Clarita Valley. "It can be intimidating at times because as you saw in the last couple of fires that we had, it can be unstoppable until the winds die down", said Bobby Cox, an engineer with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
