Firefighters used rescue boats to evacuate seven people from their homes and around 70 were also led to safety.

London fire brigade said seven fire engines and 49 firefighters were attending the incident, which was expected to go on for at least four hours.

Water levels rose to almost 20 inches in places, with flooding stretching across an area of about 650 metres by 100 metres. Water supplies have been restored.

Members of staff from Thames Water were based in Hammersmith Town Hall throughout Friday night to answer questions from the public.

It was later reported that the flow of water from the burst main had slowed, and that flood waters had receded. It is understood that many basements in the area have been inundated.

Thames Water said areas across central and west London may have no water or low pressure.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said that were 35 firefighters and officers in the area.

"The water is about two feet deep and rising", he added. They say engineers detected a leak through listening devices and that the decision was made to fix it before a burst occurred.
