The court heard that a surgeon colleague was "taken aback" when he discovered the initials SB on the patient's liver when removing it after it failed.
Bramhall, who is world-renowned in his profession of specializing in liver, spleen and pancreas surgery, later resigned from his job at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2014.
A judge ordered Bramhall, 53, to pay a £10,000 fine and undertake 120 hours of community service when he was sentenced at Birmingham crown court.
He used an argon beam machine, an instrument created to seal bleeding blood vessels, to sear his initials "SB" into their livers.

Passing sentence, Judge Paul Farrer QC reportedly said: "Both of the (transplant) operations were long and hard".
Simon Bramhall pleaded guilty last month to two counts of assault in a case a prosecutor called "without legal precedent in criminal law". I accept that on both occasions you were exhausted and stressed and I accept that this may have affected your judgment.
"I was meant to be undergoing a life saving operation".

She said her trust in doctors had been destroyed, adding: "My lack of trust in the doctors made me question what could have gone wrong with my new liver". I genuinely believe that the failure of the liver was due to the actions of Simon Bramhall burning his initials on to it.
Acknowledging it hadn't caused either of the patients' organs to fail, Badenoch then told the court: "This case is about his practice on two occasions, without the consent of the patient and for no clinical reason whatever, to burn his initials on to the surface of a newly-transplanted liver".
"Mr Bramhall had to work exceptionally hard and use all of his skill to complete the operation". But the surgeon used the device to burn his initials "SB" into the livers of two patients.
A nurse asked what the marks were and Bramhall was said to have replied: "I do this".
"Mr. Bramhall made a mistake in the context of a complex clinical situation and this has been dealt with via the appropriate authorities, said a statement released by The Queen Elizabeth Hospital".
"He knew that the action could cause no harm to the patient", said Mr Badenoch.
Defense attorneys argued Bramhall's acts were a "naïve and foolhardy" attempt on his part to relieve the tension of multiple operations, the BBC reported.
