It involves 26 postures and is usually practiced in a room heated to 35-42 degrees Celsius.

Despite its popularity, little is known about the health benefits associated with it and even less is known about the stipulation that it is carried out in a hot environment. While the yoga practice-founded and popularised in the 70s by Bikram Choudhry-has always been a favourite of people seeking to add an extra level of difficulty to their practice, there's new evidence to suggest the addition of 40°c heat does nothing to make it more beneficial than other forms of yoga.

There was also evidence to suggest that it could help delay the build-up of plaque inside arteries that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Instead, the same effects were also seen at room temperature, the researchers said. The research indicated that the heated environment did not play a role in causing improvements in vascular health.

The study involved 52 sedentary but otherwise healthy adults aged 40 to 60. They were split into three groups of 19, 14 and 19 people respectively.

However, performing yoga in a hot room was no more beneficial than practising it at normal room temperature, say the researchers. The control group did nothing.

A noninvasive measurement of changes in the endothelium-dependent vasodilation (endothelium is a layer of cells that lines the interior of blood vessels, and vasodilation refers to the dilation of blood vessels) between the first two groups, each of which performed yoga for 12 weeks, showed no significant differences.

Researchers from Texas State University and the University of Texas in Austin set out to assess whether the heated environment of Bikram yoga is essential to improving the health of the body's network of blood vessels.

A new study published in Experimental Physiology is the first report to date to isolate the effects of the heat in Bikram yoga.
