House Heads for Vote on Stopgap Funding Plan: Shutdown Update
The House is now considering a bill to extend government funding through February 16. Trump tweeted Thursday morning.
With a possible government shutdown looming this weekend, the House had planned to vote late today on a stopgap spending bill that would keep government funding flowing to February 16 as delicate negotiations continue to protect young, undocumented immigrants brought illegally as children from deportation. "That's wrong and we can't give in to that", he said in The New York Observer.
The White House isn't immediately responding to questions about the tweet. A White House spokesman said Trump backs the continuing resolution, although he'd prefer that other legislation like CHIP not be attached to the spending bill. The White House later clarified the president's comments, saying that he supports the continuing resolution being proposed in the House.
In the event of a shutdown, food inspections, federal law enforcement, airport security checks, and other vital services would continue, as would Social Security, other federal benefit programs and military operations.
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said he expects the Senate will vote on on a debate-limiting motion with time to spare on Friday.
The last-minute confusion over CHIP further complicates spending negotiations that were stalled when Trump rejected a bipartisan Senate immigration plan meant to pave the way for a long-term spending agreement.
Trump tweeted earlier Thursday a message that was originally interpreted as disparaging of the current proposal to keep the government funded, though congressional Republicans later said the President was fully on board with that plan.
House passage came only after conservatives secured a promise from House Speaker Paul Ryan that he would soon advance some type of legislation to bolster USA military readiness.
