Eulogizing the gifted jazz trumpeter, Mr Addy, popularly called Uncle Ken, said the South African was a true gem when it comes to music.
Masekela, who was also an anti-apartheid activist, will be remembered for his song, Bring Him Back, which was dedicated to the then incarcerated ANC leader, Nelson Mandela in 1987. "Rest in power beloved, you are forever in our hearts", the statement said.
Ramapolo Hugh Masekela was born on 4 April 1939 in KwaGuqa township, 100km (60 miles) east of the capital, Pretoria, part of a musical household. At the age of 14, he was given his first trumpet by the respected anti-apartheid campaigner Father Trevor Huddleston.
Between 1964-1966, Masekela was married to singer, actress and activist Miriam Makeba (1932-2008), one of the most important figures fighting the white-ruled apartheid regime outside South Africa. He attended Manhattan School of Music in NY, where he studied classical trumpet from 1960 to 1964.
He immersed himself in the NY jazz scene, watching jazz greats such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. He made his way to the USA, where he honed his skills as a horn player under the tutelage of jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong.
Masekela have over 50 albums.
In the late 1960s, in the heat of the "Summer of Love", Masekela moved to Los Angeles, where he fell in with hippie icons like David Crosby, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper.

Masekela gained notoriety in 1967 when he performed at the Monterey Pop Festival alongside Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds and many others.
His global appeal hit new heights in 1968 when his instrumental single Grazin' in the Grass went to number one in the USA charts. The last time he was here, he taught my son to play the trumpet.
Masekela returned to South Africa in 1990 after Mandela was freed and the ban on the African National Congress party was lifted.
Masekela "passed peacefully" in the country's commercial capital, Johannesburg "after a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer", his family said in a statement on Tuesday.

In a career spanning more than five decades, Masekela gained worldwide recognition with his distinctive afro-jazz sound and hits such as Soweto Blues, which served as one of the soundtracks to the anti-apartheid movement.
