Members of Udhyogakkaagi Yuvajanaru stage a protest and prepare pakodas in front of the BJP state office in Bengaluru on Saturday
Chidambaram's dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for claiming that people selling pakodas could also be considered employed triggered a war of words between the BJP and the Congress.
Real job creation, he said, will be reflected by robust increase in private investment, private consumption, exports and credit demand which was not happening yet.
Former Union minister P Chidambaram today joined the debate on job creation, contending in a series of tweets that India is witnessing a three-year spell of "modest, but jobless growth and the government is clueless about how to create jobs".
He further said the Congress only treated poor people as a "voting bloc", and claimed that the BJP was focussed on generating employment for them.
The BJP said the comparison, made between the "livelihood of millions of hardworking Indians from humble background (s)" to begging, betrayed the Congress' "perpetual disdain for the poor".

Davis tries to reassure Tory Euro-sceptics over Brexit
In the interview to be broadcast Sunday, Trump added that he predicted the Brexit result, and that he understands the concerns about immigration that led to the vote.
He also challenged government contention that Mudra or micro loans can create regular jobs. "I empathise with him", the former finance minister tweeted.
Chidambaram, a former finance minister, said the claim of 70 lakh new jobs in 2017-18 had been punctured by two scholars and there were reports that the number of contributing members in Provident Fund declined from 462 lakh in July 2017 to 438 lakh in September 2017.
BJP posted a tweet in reaction to Chidambaram's comments.
Reacting to Chidambaram, BJP spokesperson Sambi Patra said, "self-reliance by virtue of hard work, skill and loan by government is not a job for those, who for all these years, mastered the art of self-reliance by virtue of corruption". Ask him and he will tell you that he aspires to a regular and secure job.
The Opposition, led by the Congress party has frequently slammed the ruling NDA government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a lack of job creation, to which PM Modi responded in an interview by giving a "pakoda" seller example.
