Malas right Papadopoulos centre and Anastasiades are seen as the top three candidates

Nicholas Papadopoulos of the center-right DIKO party and Stavros Malas, backed by the communist-linked AKEL party, are the main opponents of Nicos Anastasiades, the incumbent candidate of the ruling center-right Democratic Rally Party (DISY).

The election results will largely determine the next day's moves by those who will be out of second round, as the first two candidates who will emerge from the electoral process on 28 January 2018 will compete the following Sunday.

Halfway through the voting, Chief Returning Officer Kypros Kyprianou said just over 30 percent of voters have cast ballots so far, almost nine percent fewer than the 2013 presidential election.

Nicholas Papadopoulos, leader of the center-right DIKO party and the son of late Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, trailed in third place with almost 25.6 percent.

Concerns over widespread voter apathy appeared to be borne out as around 30 percent of eligible voters didn't casts ballots Sunday, a significant percentage given Cyprus' traditionally high voter turnout rates. They also accuse him of not doing enough to assist a middle class that was severely affected by the financial crisis.

Flu widespread across US for third straight week

The Greek Cypriot polls come in the wake of January 7 general elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Greek Cypriots' neighbor on the Eastern Mediterranean island.

But both Malas, 50, and Papadopoulos, 44, have attacked Anastasiades for the failure of the peace talks in July, with Malas saying the president was not bold enough to clinch a deal and Papadopoulos saying the president made too many concessions at the talks.

A stalemate would mean continuation of the present partition of Cyprus, which started when Turkey sent its troops to occupy 37 percent of the island's territory, reacting to a coup organized by the military rulers of Greece in 1974.

Malas and Papadopoulos want to see an end to the division, while Anastasiades has said the country should remain as it is if the outcome that Cypriot Greeks want can not be attained. Papadopoulos said he would first sound out U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Anastasiades has said his leadership brought the country's economy back from near bankruptcy.
