Indian Muslim woman faces death threats for leading Friday Prayers

This has been claimed to be the first in the history of the country.

In 2010, she was invited by the Quran Sunnath Society for a session and is now the secretary of the society.

Amina Wadud, an American Muslim Reformist leader, is considered to be the first woman in the world to lead the Jumu'ah prayer. Khur'aan Sunnath Society members follow ideas of Chekannur Maulavi, who led a life based on his own interpretation of Quran. "It was held at the central committee office of our Society, where we used to gather every Friday for the prayers", she told PTI.

The radical move has kicked up a wide debate for and against the practise of a woman leading Jumu'ah, on the social media.

Jamaida, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram has revealed that after Friday prayers threats have been intensified against her but she is determined and has made a decision to go ahead with organising such prayers in other parts of the state as well.

A section of people, who was unhappy with this act, threatened her over the phone, following which she was given a security cover.

"I have been receiving a number of threats through YouTube and Facebook since yesterday".

The Friday prayer or Juma Nawaz was with a difference in Malappuram city in northern Kerala on January 26.
