Intel previously acknowledged that the software patch it issued appeared to be causing some customers' computers to reboot more frequently than normal.
Shenoy further explained that the patches released after months of development caused computers to reboot more often than normal, and cause other unpredictable behavior.
Intel Corp. reported on Monday that it has discovered the cause of reboot issues that affected its Broadwell and Haswell processors after patches were applied created to fix potential side-channel "speculative execution" exploits. The stability issues were initially thought to be contained to older Broadwell and Haswell chips, but Intel confirmed last week it was also happening on Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and Kaby Lake processors.
The company has found the root cause of the problem - at least for some of its chips - and is working on a new patch. If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels.

Eskom's controversial CFO resigns before court appearance

Intel Corp. on Monday announced that patches it released to address high-security vulnerabilities in its chips are faulty. Just this morning, Dell advised its customers not to install its Spectre-fixing update.
Hopefully Intel's upcoming firmware will also fix the performance impact that is connected to the security patches, although this remains to be seen.
"Has anybody talked to them and told them they are f*cking insane?"
According to Techcrunch, Torvalds suspects the IBRS workaround is too slow and inefficient to be rolled out universally, and Intel hence made the Meltdown fix optional as well as adding in "garbage" additional features. Linux inventor Linus Torvalds voiced his concerns regarding Intel Spectre patches and we are going to talk about that here.
The statement has been posted on Intel's website.
"I'm sure there is some lawyer there who says 'we'll have to go through motions to protect against a lawsuit.' But legal reasons do not make for good technology, or good patches that I should apply", Torvalds wrote in a Linux Kernel Mailing List post.
