An oil tanker burning in the East China Sea has sunk after an explosion, according to Chinese state media.

China Central Television said the Sanchi, which had drifted into Japan's exclusive economic zone, "suddenly ignited" around noon, with flames spreading from end to end, before sinking.

Dramatic photos of the scene showed tall flames raging on board the ship, which was carrying nearly a million barrels of crude oil.

It collided with the CF Crystal, which was carrying grain from the United States, about 184 kilometres off China's coast near Shanghai.

The Iranian oil tanker sank around midday Sunday after the spread of fire to new oil condensate tanks created blazes as high as 100 meters and increased temperature to 350 degrees Celsius (660 degrees Fahrenheit). There were 32 people on board the tanker.

It remains unclear if there has been a significant oil leak into the sea.

The crew was all Iranian expect for two Bangladeshis.

The head of Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, Mohammad Rastad, has said that there is no hope to find the missing crew members, ISNA reported. The Hong Kong-based vessel's 21 crew members were evacuated.
