Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee and Meryl Streep as Katharine Graham in"The Post
Everything about the film feels weirdly familiar today. With Spielberg, Streep, and Hanks taking their licks at the man in the Oval Office, it's a fair bet that few will care that "The Post" comes up short.
The film tells the story of the Washington Post and its decision to publish the Pentagon Papers in 1971.
"Had the election gone the other way, we probably would've been making a quaint museum piece, which everyone would have been commenting about the ugly fashions and big cars", notes Hanks, who earlier this month discussed the film at an industry screening.
In a key moment in Steven Spielberg's mesmerizing journalism drama "The Post", Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) is on a nighttime phone call, with several powerful men in her ear telling her, conflictingly, what she should do.
'The Post', distributed by 20th Century Fox, is now showing at the Reel Deal.
Besides being publisher of the influential newspaper, Graham was well connected with leading political figures, and luminaries regularly attended dinner parties at her Georgetown home. She studied under first her father then her husband. And Streep is so good with subtleties that Graham's growing strength and personal empowerment are hardly perceptible until, at once, her transformation into an engaged leader who not only commands but demands equal respect among her peers in the evolving days of feminism is complete. "She wasn't raised to have an opinion". The interviewer told [Ephron] she was very welcome - she was very welcome to be a researcher, a copygirl, or a secretary.
Bradlee, on the other hand, was ambitious.
The Tweeter-in-Chief screaming "fake news" and railing against the New York Times, the Post and almost every other media outlet that isn't Fox News, however, isn't as gravely serious as the attempt by President Richard Nixon and his gang of criminals to stop the publication of the stories taken from the leaked, top-secret history of the Vietnam War.

US military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, an entrenched Cold Warrior, became a whistleblower after experiencing the battlefield quagmire of the Vietnam War firsthand.
Part of me wanted to go all Braveheart and pooh-pooh the idea of Kay risking more because she's rich ("And the common man who bleeds on the battlefield, does he risk less?"), but The Post works hard to sell us. And I think that what - it starts with someone like Kay finding her voice and saying what she wants and what she thinks. The company, then struggling, was about to go public, and the male board members were afraid doing so would hurt them financially. Streep's performance is predictably sensational at capturing a woman full of self-doubt in a society still skeptical of women in positions of authority, and Spielberg employs all of his skills in shots that emphasize her insecurity: peering down at her over Bradlee's shoulder in a way that pins her in a corner, or circling her at a party like she's prey just ready to be eaten. The documents became known as The Pentagon Papers. Last February, Spielberg accelerated production of Liz Hannah and Josh Singer's screenplay after President Donald Trump's inauguration. He had also written the script for "The Fifth Estate", about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, and worked on "The West Wing".
Publishing the papers could land Bradlee and Graham in prison. She had often deferred to her editor, but in the end, the choice fell squarely on her shoulders.
Spielberg makes no direct indication of his intent, the opportunistic quality of the project is enough to suggest as much. "He's so interested in everything and is curious about everything".
"The Post" isn't so much a film about the Pentagon Papers as it is the story of one woman's shift from figurehead to publisher. Graham had been a friend of both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, while the editor palled around with JFK. Even if it happens to be a story on President Nixon's daughter's wedding. Each administration knew the war was unwinnable, but kept that fact from Congress and the American people.
Nixon even used his infamous Watergate "plumbers" to try to get dirt on Daniel Ellsberg, the Rand Corp. employee who had leaked the documents.
Probably not. So watch what happens in "The Post" because it's pretty important to US history, and see if you aren't entertained, too. Because many white American boys from middle and upper class families died in that conflict, the public was outraged by the revelations.
"It felt like this movie needed to come out this year", Pascal said.

Tight end Rob Gronkowski was also selected to the All-Pro team, after catching 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns. It's a playoff game, so it's not like it's the preseason where I can go out there, 'Oh, it's Brady, ' and I'm chillin.
