"The security forces are clearing the building now", Khogyani said following the attack.

After blowing up a vehicle outside the charity's compound, the attackers used a rocket propelled grenade to storm the complex.

In eastern Ghazni province, meanwhile, four Afghan police were killed after their checkpoint came under attack by insurgents, said Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor.

Militants stormed the offices of Save the Children in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing four people and triggering a shootout with police that lasted nearly 10 hours, provincial officials and the organization said.

At least 14 more were injured and taken to a hospital, said Inamullah Miakhial, spokesman for the Nangarhar regional hospital.

As security forces fought their way in, they recovered one body inside the compound.

After the Taliban denied carrying out the attack, IS claimed it, saying it had targeted "British, Swedish and Afghan institutions in Jalalabad" where the group is particularly active.

The attack on Save the Children was the latest violence to strike a foreign aid group in war-torn Afghanistan.

The province has become a stronghold for Islamic State, which has grown to become one of Afghanistan's most unsafe militant groups since it appeared around the beginning of 2015. "Aid workers, and their premises and assets, should never be a target", the statement said.

The decision by the charity, which has been working in Afghanistan for over three decades, underlined the growing dangers for aid workers, who have increasingly become casualties of a surge in militant violence in recent years.

The attack followed a deadly weekend siege of the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital Kabul in which 22 people were killed, including 14 foreigners.
