Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he instructed his ambassador to meet Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to express opposition to the bill, which would make using phrases like "Polish death camps" punishable by up to three years in prison.

They especially worry it could be used to stifle research and debate on topics that are anathema to Poland's nationalistic authorities, particularly the painful issue of Poles who blackmailed Jews or denounced them to the Nazis during the war. "One can not change history and the Holocaust can not be denied", Netanyahu said, in comments mirrored by other senior Israeli officials.

The Israeli member of Knesset, the son of a Holocaust survivor, characterized the bill - which is expected to become law in Poland shortly - as an effort to rewrite history.

Polish MPs have passed a bill providing for imprisonment for up to three years for those who use phrases that imply that Poland bears responsibility for crimes against humanity committed by Nazi Germany. It still needs approval from Poland's Senate and president.

Officials in Warsaw argue that the phrase in question indicates that Poles have some responsibility for the crimes - mainly against Jews - committed by the Nazis on Polish soil after the country's occupation in 1939.

Netanyahu's government has generally had good relations with Poland, which has been recently voting with Israel in global organisations.

The legislation provoked outrage in Israel.

"The Jewish people, the State of Israel, and the entire world must ensure that the Holocaust is recognised for its horrors and atrocities", Rivlin said.

The Polish government did not surrender to Nazi Germany and its government did not collaborate with the Nazis.

The bill, passed Friday, is a response to cases in recent years of foreign media using "Polish death camps" to describe Auschwitz and other Nazi-run camps.

But it added: "There is no doubt that the term "Polish death camps" is a historical misrepresentation".

"Restrictions on statements by scholars and others regarding the Polish people's direct or indirect complicity with the crimes committed on their land during the Holocaust are a serious distortion", it said.
