ATM maker warns banks of possible 'jackpotting' hacks

Diebold Nixdorf Inc and NCR Corp, two of the world's largest ATM makers, have cautioned that cyber criminals are targeting USA cash machines with tools that force them to spit out money via hacking schemes.

Security news website Krebs on Security reported that ATM manufacturer NCR Corp. had sent an advisory to customers on Friday, in which it announced that it had received reports from the Secret Service and other sources about jackpotting attacks, which the advisory calls "logical attacks", on US ATM machines.

The security news website has made it clear, it has always been a threat for banks in Europe and Asia.

A Secret Service alert obtained by Krebs on Security described the modus operandi of "jackpotting" fraudsters. And both organizations recommended physical security changes, such as using rear-loading ATMs, locking down physical access and closely watching for suspicious activity like opening the machine's top. In fact, that's why they use these double tactics. That's why they prefer to keep malware in the ATM unnoticed and silently collect skimmed card data, leaving the second option - instant cash out - for the future.

"This should be treated as a call to action to take appropriate steps to protect their ATMs against these forms of attack and mitigate any consequences".

A 2016 report by Bank Info Security regarding jackpotting in Europe said hackers can steal the cash without physical contact with the ATMs, using just a mobile phone. The memo also states that the first attacks have already been reported in the U.S.
